This glossary of 158 commonly used terms helps modern readers understand specific words and phrases from the newspaper.
acrostic a series of lines in which the first, last, or other letters, when taken in order, spell a word, phrase, etc.
adamantine too hard to cut, break, or pierce; having the hardness or luster of a diamond.
ague an intermitting fever with cold and hot fits.
allopathic hands of or relating to the practice of allopathy; a method of treating disease.
alum a mineral salt with an acid taste.
antimonial wine used for medicinal purposes; induces vomiting.
arrow root used for extracting virus caused by poisoned arrows.
auger a tool to bore holes.
 
balsam a resinous juice with a mixture of oil; contains benzoic acid.
bastard a flat file used to remove metal.
bbl. a barrel.
bed ticking a strong, durable fabric in plain, twill, or satin weave; used to cover box springs, mattresses, and pillows.
blacking a preparation, such as shoe or stove polish; used to impart a black color.
bleached drilling a bleached cotton fabric.
bl'k bulk packaging.
blue drill a strong, twilled cotton fabric.
bogus maker a counterfeiter.
bolt to pass through a sieve.
brimstone sulphur.
brindle cow a cow with a grey or brown streak; a pattern or patchy coloring.
broadaxes an ax with a broad head; used as a battle ax.
broadcloth a woolen or worsted fabric constructed with a plain or twill weave; a compact texture with a lustrous finish.
brogan a heavy, sturdy shoe; an ankle-high work shoe.
broma a light form of cocoa.
Brosha a type of shawl.
brownware a type of pottery.
burr a rough, prickly husk or covering of seeds and fruits, such as the chestnut.
butt used to hinge or joint an object.
bxs boxes.
 
cap lead placed over a vent to keep priming dry.
capsicum fruit of a pepper plant; used as a condiment and intestinal stimulant.
carminative balsam a drug that causes expulsion of gas from the bowels.
cassimere a twill-weave; worsted suiting fabric with a striped pattern.
castile soap a mild soap; made from olive oil and sodium hydroxide.
castings throwing or sending into a mold to give shape.
chalybeate any liquid that iron enters.
chintz a printed cotton fabric; often used for draperies.
chronometer a timepiece or timing device with a mechanism for adjusting accuracy.
citron a fruit of the citron tree; a large species of lemon.
cobourg a thin, worsted fabric used to make women's dresses.
common schools publicly supported schools.
cordials a medicine made from vegetables; when mixed with sweeteners the medicine is agreeable to the taste.
cottonades a heavy, coarse fabric made of cotton or mixed fibers; resembles wool; used in manufacturing of work clothes.
court plaster an adhesive plaster of silk coated with isinglass and glycerin.
cravat a neck cloth worn by men.
Cutlerization a religious movement founded by Alpheus Cutler.
 
daguerrian a type of early photography.
delaines alpacas a cloth woven into a mixed fabric of cotton warp and wool weft.
do ditto.
domestics cotton cloth.
double brim leghorn a hat made of straw with a double broad, soft brim.
drag a heavy wooden or steel frame drawn over the ground.
dray a low cart or carriage drawn by a horse.
dyspepsia indigestion.
 
edging creating a border on cloth.
embrocation to moisten or rub a part of the body with liniment or lotion.
expectorant alternative a medicine that facilitates the secretion or expulsion of phlegm, mucus, or other matters from the respiratory tract.
 
farina fine dust or powder contained in plants.
febrifuge any medicine that helps relieve fevers.
felloe a rim or section of a wagon wheel supported by spokes.
ferretts imported French shoes; also a tape commonly made from cotton, but sometimes from silk; then known as Italian ferret.
film a thin skin on the eye.
fistula a deep, narrow callous ulcer.
fodder dry food for cattle.
french cordials a stimulant; liquor.
 
gaiter boot a heavy cloth or leather covering for the leg that extends from the instep to the ankle or knee.
galloon a narrow band or braid used for trimming; commonly made of lace, metallic thread, or embroidery.
giging using a gig to spear a fish or frog.
gimlet a small hand tool with a spiraled shank; a screw tip; a cross handle used for boring holes.
gimp a narrow flat braid; rounded fabric cord used for trimming.
girths a strap encircling an animal's body to secure a load; a cinch.
grange boot farm boot.
gums a substance from a plant or tree that dries into water-soluble, noncrystalline, brittle solids.
gutta percha goods coagulated latex of a tree; resembles rubber.
 
haberdashery a men's clothing business.
harness galls plaques of fibrous tissue that form where the harness rubs.
hartshorn antler of a male deer; used as a source of ammonia and smelling salts.
hollowware metal tableware, such as bowls, pitchers, teapots, and trays.
horse rasp designed for filing and shaping horses' hooves before shoeing.
Hyson Tea a smooth tea with a greenish-yellow color.
 
index plate a plate perforated with rows of numbers; equally spaced holes used as a guide for indexing work.
ink fish a cuttlefish.
inst. for instance.
 
jaconette a light-weight, cotton cloth with a smooth but slightly stiff finish; used for clothing and bandages.
joiner pencil a carpenter's pencil.
jumbal a small, flat, ring-shaped cake or cookie.
 
kerseys a coarse twilled woolen cloth with a cotton warp; used in making work clothes.
kip skins leather prepared from the skin of young or small cattle.
 
landanum used as a pain reliever and sleeping medication.
lath machine a small piece of wood used to support roof tiles.
lawns a light cotton or linen fabric of very fine weave.
leggings a leg covering extending from the ankle to the knee; made of leather or canvas.
lever escapement a key component in mechanical and pocket watches.
linseys a coarse fabric woven from linen or cotton; coarse wool filling.
Locofoco a member of the radical New York City Democrats, organized in 1835 to oppose conservative members of society.
logwood a very dense and firm texture made from logs; red in color.
longsickness a disease of cattle.
lustre a pedestal vase with hanging glass prisms.
 
madder a plant with open clusters of small, yellowish flowers; used in dyeing cloth.
madeira a fortified white wine from the Madeira Island.
malaga wine imported from Malaga, Spain.
manila rope rope made from Manila hemp.
martingale part of a tack or harness; used to steady or hold a horse's head.
merino wool from sheep that originated in Spain.
mosquito bars an alternate form of a mosquito net; designed to protect from insects.
moulding planes a tool for shaping wood; used to cut mouldings on the edge of a board.

opodeldoc a medication made of alcohol, Windsor soap, camphor, oil of rosemary, and other aromatic oils.
osnaburg sacks a sack made from heavy, coarse cotton fabric.
 
parametto a light, twilled dress fabric with a silk or cotton warp and a woolen weft.
paregoric a medication with antidiarrheal, antitussive, and analgesic properties; used to calm fretful children.
pearl sago powdery starch from sago palms.
peltries fur skins.
percussion caps a primer for muzzleloading firearms.
phrenology a study of the physical qualities of a person's head to determine innate mental abilities.
picayune of little value or importance.
pilot cloth a thick blue cloth used to make overcoats.
piquet a game of cards.
plated ware base metal articles used for tableware; has the appearance of gold or silver.
poll-evil a swelling on the head of a horse between the neck and ear.
porter a liquor made of dried malt; it is brewed at a high temperature.
pulverized sugar ground granulated sugar.
 
queensware a hard, cream-colored earthenware perfected in 1765 by Wedgwood.
 
ring-bone a morbid growth of bony matter.
runnet bag the stomach bag of a young calf; used in cheesemaking to curdle milk.
 
saleratus sodium bicarbonate used in cooking; baking soda.
sanative pills pills that have the power to cure or heal.
satinett a thin, inferior satin containing cotton.
sealing wax a resinous preparation, soft when heated; used for sealing letters and documents.
sarsenet a fine, soft fabric made in plain or twill weave; used for lining clothing.
sks sacks.
snuff a charred or partly consumed portion of a candlewick.
sorrel mare a light reddish-brown horse.
spavin a tumor on the inside of a horse's hoof.
stereotyping impressing copies on stereotype plates.
string-halt a sudden twitching motion of a horse's hind leg.
sulphur brimstone.
superroyal sheet a particular size of printing and writing paper.
 
tamarind the fruit of a tropical Asian evergreen tree.
tarpaulin heavy, water-proof cloth used as a covering.
Thomsonian medicine a theory of named after botanic physician Samuel Thomson.
ticking a strong, cotton fabric; used in making cloth ticks.
toper a hard drinker or chronic drunkard.

velveteens a cotton fabric with short pile.
vermifuge a medication used to expel worms or parasites from the intestines.

worm syrup a medication for killing intestinal worms.
worsted braid a braid made of firmly twisted yarn; used for weaving and knitting.
 
young hyson a Chinese green tea dried and prepared from twisted leaves.
